Solar energy, driving the energy transition

According to SolarPower Europe,  a historic record of 65 GW of photovoltaic capacity was added in Europe in 2024,. In June 2025, solar electricity production exceeded that of nuclear power in the EU for the first time. 

Employment in the sector is also increasing: 865,000 people now work in the solar industry in the European Union. Of these, over 66,000 employed in operations and maintenance — a rapidly growing area as the number of installations increases.

This expansion brings new challenges for maintenance operators. "Roofs covered with panels limit traffic areas and can increase risks," says Maxime Takis, Systems Product Manager at Delta Plus. "It is therefore important to consider safety from the design stage onwards, incorporating solutions that are suitable for maintenance."

Delta Plus has developed Supco precisely to meet these challenges, drawing  on its long-standing expertise in permanent fall protection systems.

What does the Supco solution consist of? 

  • A hot-dip galvanised steel post that can be adapted to different types of flat roof  including those in industrial, logistics or tertiary environments.
  • It is resistant to corrosion and the most demanding weather conditions.
  • Its design incorporates a flange for water drainage to ensure watertightness.
  • It serves as both a support for solar panels and as an anchor point for our lifeline or rail with trolley solutions, which are designed for maintenance operators.

"This type of post is a versatile anchoring system designed and manufactured by Delta Plus. It has proven itself in many contexts and has been adapted here to support various types of equipment installed on roofs, such as photovoltaic panels, air conditioning units, etc.," explains Maxime Takis.

With a load capacity of 2 tonnes, Supco offers a solution that is compatible with a wide range of technical equipment. Supco is available in three standard heights – 500, 800 and 1000 mm and can also be custom-made to meet the specific requirements of the construction site.


"Everything is produced in-house," says Maxime Takis, "which enables us to adapt the design and provide customised solutions for our customers."

How often should a rooftop photovoltaic installation be maintained?

Photovoltaic panels must be inspected at least once a year by a professional. Regular cleaning is recommended to maintain their efficiency, especially in summer when dust and pollen accumulate more, and in winter in case of snow or frost. 

 

Can you clean your photovoltaic panels yourself?

It is strongly recommended that you call in a professional for safety reasons:

  • safety: working at height requires mandatory fall protection equipment
  • expertise: to avoid damaging the panels with unsuitable products or techniques
  • Compliance: to comply with current safety standards
  • efficiency: a professional can also carry out a complete inspection of the system

Check with your manufacturer and the regulations in force.

 

Is it mandatory to install a fall protection system for solar panel maintenance?

Regulations require fall protection measures to be put in place whenever work is carried out at a certain height: in Europe, for example, this is between 2 and 3 metres, depending on the country. Roofs equipped with photovoltaic panels must be secured with fall protection devices (lifelines, guardrails, anchor points) to ensure the safety of technicians.

 

What are the different types of fall protection for photovoltaic installations?

There are several complementary solutions:

  • lifelines (horizontal or vertical) allowing safe access and movement,
  • permanent guardrails for collective protection,
  • individual anchor points for securing a limited space,
  • walkways to facilitate movement on roofs requiring crossing,
  • PPE (Personal Protective Equipment): harnesses, lanyards, energy absorbers for technicians carrying out work.

The choice depends on the configuration of the roof and the type of intervention.
